Arusha National Park | Go To Africa Safaris

Arusha National Park is a great place to begin exploring northern Tanzania. Located close to the city of Arusha, the park is smaller than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, but its landscape is remarkably diverse. Within a relatively short distance, you can move through montane forest, open grassland, volcanic terrain, and the peaceful Momella Lakes, with Mount Meru rising above it all.

Mount Meru is one of the park’s defining features. At 4,566 metres, it is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and attracts travelers looking for a challenging trekking experience. Even if you are not planning to climb it, the mountain provides an impressive backdrop during game drives and walks through the park.

Wildlife can be found throughout the different habitats. Giraffes are particularly common, while buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, elephants, hippos, and various antelope species can also be spotted. The forest areas are home to monkeys and many birds. Predators such as leopards are present as well, although they can be difficult to see among the vegetation.

The Momella Lakes are one of the quieter highlights of the park. These shallow lakes attract waterbirds, and flamingos may gather around the water depending on the conditions. Canoeing on the lakes offers a completely different experience from sitting in a safari vehicle and gives you time to appreciate the scenery without the sound of an engine.

Another reason to visit Arusha National Park is the opportunity for guided walking. Walking through the park allows you to notice things that can easily be missed from a vehicle, such as animal tracks, plants, insects, and smaller birds. It also gives the safari a more personal and active feel.

Because of its location, Arusha National Park works well as a day trip or as the first stop on a longer Tanzania safari. It can be combined with Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park.

For travelers who want mountains, wildlife, walking, lakes, and beautiful scenery in one destination, Arusha National Park offers a refreshing start to a Tanzania adventure.
