Kibale Forest is a beautiful tropical forest in western Uganda where the sounds of monkeys and birds often lead you deeper into the trees. It is one of the best places in the country to experience Uganda’s primates, with chimpanzees being the main attraction. Unlike a traditional safari where you spend most of the day in a vehicle, Kibale is best experienced on foot.

Chimpanzee trekking takes you along forest trails with guides who know the area and help you follow the movements of the chimpanzees. You might hear them calling before you see them, and then suddenly spot a group moving through the branches above you. The forest is home to several other primates, including red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and olive baboons. There are also plenty of birds, butterflies, and smaller forest creatures to discover along the trails.

For travelers who want more time in the forest, guided nature walks offer a slower way to explore. You can learn about the trees and plants, listen for birds, and notice the smaller details that are easy to miss when you are focused only on finding the larger animals.

Kibale is also well placed for exploring other parts of western Uganda. It can be combined with Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you can go on game drives and take a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, or with other destinations further south.
