Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking Combo Safari: 5-Day Itinerary
A gorilla and chimpanzee trekking combo safari is one of the best ways to experience Uganda’s incredible wildlife in a single trip. Imagine spending a morning following wild chimpanzees through a tropical forest and, a few days later, standing quietly in the presence of a mountain gorilla family. These are two very different experiences, but together they create memories that can last a lifetime.
Uganda is an excellent destination for this adventure. Kibale National Park is famous for its chimpanzees, while Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to endangered mountain gorillas. Although the two parks are separated by several hours of driving, a well-planned five-day itinerary allows you to visit both without rushing every part of the experience.
At Go To Africa Safari, this itinerary is designed for travellers who want to discover Uganda’s great apes, enjoy the beautiful countryside, and experience the country’s natural beauty within a limited amount of time.
Day 1: Travel from Entebbe or Kampala to Kibale National Park
Your gorilla and chimpanzee trekking combo safari begins with pickup from Entebbe International Airport or your accommodation in Kampala. After meeting your driver-guide, you will begin the journey to Kibale National Park in western Uganda.
The drive usually takes around five to seven hours, depending on your starting point, traffic, and stops along the way. The journey is part of the adventure, taking you through rural communities, green farmland, small towns, and beautiful countryside.
You can stop for lunch along the way before continuing towards Fort Portal, a welcoming town known for its rolling hills, crater lakes, and views of the Rwenzori Mountains when conditions are clear.
Upon arrival near Kibale National Park, check in at your lodge and take some time to relax. If you arrive early enough, you may have an opportunity to explore the surrounding area or enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before dinner.
Your guide will brief you about the following day’s chimpanzee trekking experience and explain what to bring into the forest.
Accommodation: Lodge near Kibale National Park.
Meals: Depending on your package and arrival time.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park
After an early breakfast, prepare for one of the highlights of your safari: chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park.
Kibale is one of Uganda’s best-known destinations for observing wild chimpanzees. These intelligent primates live in social communities and spend much of their time feeding, grooming, calling to one another, and moving through the forest canopy.
Before entering the forest, you will receive a briefing from authorised park staff. Your guide will explain the trekking rules and help you understand how to behave around the chimpanzees.
The trek can take a few hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are located and how far they have moved. Sometimes you hear their calls before seeing them. Their loud vocalisations can echo through the forest, making the experience exciting even before you find the group.
Once the chimpanzees are located, you will have a permitted period to observe them according to current park regulations. Watch how they interact, search for food, and move between the trees. You may also spot other primates and a variety of forest birds along the way.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and some rest. Depending on your interests and available time, you may visit a nearby community or explore the scenery around Fort Portal.
Accommodation: Lodge near Kibale National Park.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, depending on your package.
Day 3: Transfer from Kibale to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After breakfast, leave Kibale and travel towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the home of Uganda’s mountain gorillas.
This is a scenic but relatively long journey. Driving time can range from approximately five to eight hours or longer, depending on your destination within Bwindi, road conditions, and stops along the way.
The landscape gradually changes as you travel through western and southwestern Uganda. You will pass rural settlements, cultivated hillsides, and beautiful stretches of countryside. Depending on the route and available time, you may also enjoy views around the Queen Elizabeth National Park region.
It is important not to squeeze too many activities into this transfer day. A game drive or boat cruise can be considered if the route and timing allow, but the priority should be reaching your accommodation comfortably before the gorilla trek.
Bwindi has several trekking sectors, including Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. These areas are separated by mountainous terrain, so your accommodation must be arranged near the sector specified on your gorilla permit.
Upon arrival, check in at your lodge, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the following morning. Your guide can help you check your hiking gear and explain what to expect during the trek.
Accommodation: Lodge near your confirmed Bwindi trekking sector.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, depending on your package.
Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Today is likely to be the most memorable day of your gorilla and chimpanzee trekking combo safari.
Wake up early, enjoy breakfast, and head to the designated briefing point for your gorilla trekking sector. Park staff will explain the rules before you enter the forest with authorised guides and trackers.
Mountain gorillas live in family groups led by a dominant silverback. During the trek, you may encounter females feeding, young gorillas playing, or the silverback resting nearby while keeping watch over the family.
Finding the gorillas can take anywhere from a relatively short walk to several hours. The terrain is often steep, muddy, and covered in thick vegetation, so a reasonable level of fitness is helpful. Take your time, follow your guide, and ask for assistance when necessary.
When the gorilla family is found, you will generally be allowed one hour to observe the animals under standard trekking arrangements, subject to current regulations. This time passes surprisingly quickly. You may find yourself watching a young gorilla play, a mother care for her infant, or a silverback quietly observing the forest around him.
Keep the required distance, avoid flash photography, and follow your ranger’s instructions throughout the encounter. These are wild animals, and their welfare must always come first.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and some well-deserved rest. If you still have energy, you can ask about an optional community experience or simply enjoy the beautiful forest surroundings.
Accommodation: Lodge near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, depending on your package.
Day 5: Return to Entebbe or Kampala
After breakfast, begin your journey back to Entebbe or Kampala, bringing your five-day primate adventure to an end.
The return drive is long and may take around eight to ten hours or more, depending on your starting point, traffic, road conditions, and stops. There will be opportunities to stop for refreshments, lunch, and photographs along the way.
As you travel back, you will have time to reflect on the experiences of the previous days, from hearing chimpanzees calling through Kibale Forest to watching a mountain gorilla family in Bwindi.
If you have an international flight on the same day, allow a generous time buffer. Because the journey can be unpredictable, an overnight stay in Entebbe or Kampala before departure is often the more comfortable option.
Your driver-guide will drop you at your hotel or the airport according to your agreed arrangements.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch, depending on your package.

Best Time for a Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking Combo Safari
Uganda offers gorilla and chimpanzee trekking throughout the year, subject to permit availability and park conditions. The relatively drier periods, often from June to September and December to February, are popular with visitors because forest trails may be easier to navigate.
However, rain is possible in any month. During wetter periods, the forests are lush and beautiful, although the trails can become slippery and trekking may be more demanding.
Book your gorilla and chimpanzee permits well in advance, particularly if you plan to travel during popular holiday periods. Your gorilla permit determines the trekking sector you will visit, so accommodation should be arranged accordingly.
Pack sturdy hiking shoes, long trousers, waterproof clothing, insect repellent, drinking water, and a small daypack. Hiring a porter can also make the trek easier while supporting local employment.
