The Gorilla Habituation Experience Bwindi offers a deeper and more immersive way to experience Uganda’s mountain gorillas. Unlike standard gorilla trekking, where visitors spend up to one hour with a habituated gorilla family, the habituation experience allows you to spend up to four hours observing a gorilla group that is still becoming accustomed to human presence.

The main difference is the amount of time you spend with the gorillas.
During a standard trek, you visit a fully habituated gorilla family and spend a limited time observing them. During habituation, you accompany trackers and researchers as they observe a gorilla group that is still undergoing the habituation process.
You may see gorillas feeding, grooming, playing, resting, and interacting with one another. Because you have more time in the forest, there are greater opportunities to observe natural behavior and learn about gorilla conservation.
The habituation experience is available in the Rushaga sector in southern Bwindi.
The terrain can be challenging, and the gorillas may move through thick forest and steep terrain. Good physical fitness is therefore recommended.
The experience begins with a briefing before you enter the forest. Trackers and guides help locate the gorilla group, after which you follow them through the forest while maintaining the required distance and following conservation guidelines.
The time spent searching for the gorillas can vary depending on where the group has moved.
Your day starts early at the park headquarters in Rushaga.
After the briefing, you head into the forest with your guide, trackers, and other members of the habituation team. The trek can take several hours before you reach the gorillas.
Once you find the group, you can spend up to four hours observing them.
