Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s premier savannah safari destination, located in the eastern part of the country along the border with Tanzania. The park is known for its beautiful landscapes, lakes, wetlands, and diverse wildlife, making it an excellent addition to a Rwanda safari.
A safari in Akagera offers opportunities to see elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and several antelope species. The park is also home to the Big Five, making it one of the best places in Rwanda for traditional game drives.
One of the highlights of visiting Akagera is a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. The calm waters provide excellent views of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and numerous waterbirds. Early morning and evening game drives are also rewarding, especially when wildlife is most active.
Akagera is an important conservation success story. After years of challenges, wildlife populations have recovered through dedicated conservation efforts, including the reintroduction of lions and black rhinos. Today, the park offers visitors a chance to experience Rwanda’s growing safari destination while supporting conservation.
Akagera can easily be combined with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park or chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park for a complete Rwanda safari.
