Mabira Forest is an easy escape into nature for travelers who want to experience Uganda’s rainforest without going too far from Kampala. Located along the Kampala–Jinja road, this large tropical forest is filled with tall trees, winding trails, birds, monkeys, butterflies, and plenty of quiet corners to explore.
One of the nicest ways to experience Mabira is on foot. Guided forest walks take you beneath the canopy and along trails where you can listen for birds, spot monkeys moving through the trees, and learn about the different plants found in the forest. The pace is relaxed, so you have time to stop and actually take in your surroundings rather than rushing from one attraction to another.
Mabira is particularly popular with bird watchers. The forest supports many bird species, making an early morning walk especially rewarding. You may also come across red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and other small forest wildlife.
If you are looking for a little more adventure, Mabira also offers activities such as zip-lining through the forest canopy. The experience gives you a completely different view of the forest and is a fun option for travelers who want something more active.
Because of its location, Mabira Forest is easy to add to a trip between Kampala and Jinja. It can be a short stop during a road trip or a destination in its own right if you want to spend more time walking, bird watching, and enjoying the forest.
