The Rwenzori Mountains are not the kind of place you visit just to tick another destination off your list. Known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” they rise along the western border of Uganda and offer some of the most dramatic scenery in the country. Misty valleys, giant plants, waterfalls, rocky peaks, and changing landscapes make the mountains feel almost unreal as you move higher.
Hiking is the main way to experience Rwenzori Mountains National Park. There are shorter walks for travelers who want to explore the lower slopes, as well as longer multi-day treks for those hoping to go deeper into the mountains. The higher you climb, the more the landscape changes, from forest and bamboo to giant heathers, moss-covered vegetation, and alpine terrain.
Mount Stanley is the highest point in the range, with Margherita Peak reaching 5,109 metres above sea level. Reaching the summit is a serious mountain adventure and requires preparation, but you do not have to climb to the top to appreciate the Rwenzori. Even the lower trails offer beautiful views and a chance to experience the mountain at a slower pace.
The mountains are also home to forest wildlife and many bird species. Chimpanzees, elephants, buffaloes, monkeys, and several other animals can be found in the wider area, although the real attraction here is the landscape and the experience of walking through one of Uganda’s most unusual environments.
A trip to the Rwenzori Mountains can be combined with other destinations in western Uganda, including Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kibale Forest. For travelers who enjoy hiking and want something beyond the usual game drive, the Rwenzori offer an adventure that is difficult to forget.
