Kigali to Bwindi gorilla trekking is a popular option for travelers who want to visit Rwanda but experience gorilla trekking in Uganda. Instead of flying between the two countries, you can travel by road from Kigali, cross the Rwanda-Uganda border and continue towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The journey is quite practical, especially when it is planned as part of a wider Uganda and Rwanda safari. You can spend a few days in Kigali, travel through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside and then enter Uganda for one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in East Africa.
There are, however, a few things to understand before you make the journey, especially the route, border crossing, gorilla permit and where you will stay.
Why Travel From Kigali to Bwindi?
Kigali is relatively close to southwestern Uganda, making it possible to combine the two destinations in one itinerary.
This route is particularly useful for international travelers who are already visiting Rwanda or who have a flight arriving in Kigali. Rather than returning to the airport and taking another flight to Uganda, you can travel overland towards Bwindi.
It also gives you the opportunity to experience two countries during the same holiday.
You could spend time exploring Kigali, continue to Bwindi for gorilla trekking and then travel deeper into Uganda for wildlife viewing or chimpanzee trekking.
Which Route Do You Take?

This creates a much broader safari rather than making the entire journey about gorillas.
You could also finish your trip in Uganda and fly home from Entebbe, depending on your international flight arrangements.
Kigali to Bwindi or Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park?
If you are already in Kigali, it is natural to wonder whether you should simply trek gorillas in Rwanda instead.
There is no universal answer.
Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is closer to Kigali, which can make the logistics easier. Travelling to Bwindi takes more time, but it gives you the opportunity to experience Uganda and combine gorilla trekking with other Ugandan destinations.
Your decision may therefore come down to your budget, preferred itinerary, available time and whether you want to explore more of Uganda.
If your trip already includes Uganda, crossing from Kigali to Bwindi can make perfect sense.
Plan the Journey Around Your Trek
The biggest mistake would be treating Kigali to Bwindi as a simple transfer that can be arranged at the last minute.
Your gorilla permit, trekking sector, accommodation, border crossing and transport all need to fit together.
