Uganda Gorilla Permit Cost and Booking Guide
If you are planning to see Uganda’s mountain gorillas, one of the first things you need to arrange is your Uganda gorilla permit. The permit gives you access to a guided gorilla trek in the forests of southwestern Uganda and is one of the most important parts of planning your safari.
A gorilla permit is not the same thing as a complete safari package. It covers the gorilla trekking experience itself, while accommodation, transport, meals and other activities are normally arranged separately or included in a safari package.
Because gorilla trekking has limited daily availability, it is a good idea to arrange your permit before booking the rest of your trip.
How Much Is a Gorilla Permit in Uganda?
The standard gorilla trekking permit for a foreign non-resident is US$800 per person. Foreign residents pay US$700, visitors from the rest of Africa pay US$500, while East African citizens pay UGX 300,000 under the current tariff structure.
There are also discounted low-season permits for eligible visits in April, May and November 2026. During these months, foreign non-residents can pay US$600 and foreign residents US$500 for gorilla trekking. These discounted permits have different conditions, including no rescheduling.
From 1 January 2027, the standard gorilla trekking rates remain US$800 for foreign non-residents, US$700 for foreign residents, US$500 for visitors from the rest of Africa and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
The Gorilla Habituation Experience is different from ordinary gorilla trekking and costs more. Under the revised tariff effective January 2027, it is US$1,800 for foreign non-residents.
What Does the Uganda Gorilla Permit Include?
The permit gives you access to the official gorilla trekking experience. You trek into the forest with trained trackers and guides in search of a habituated gorilla family.
The experience includes the official guiding and ranger support associated with the trek. However, travellers should not assume that the permit covers everything they will need for their safari.
Your accommodation, transport to Bwindi or Mgahinga, meals, flights, personal expenses and tips are generally separate unless they have been included in a safari package.

Where Can You Use a Gorilla Permit?
Uganda’s mountain gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Bwindi is divided into several trekking sectors, including Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. The sector assigned to you matters because it determines where you will meet your gorilla family and where your trek starts.

How Do You Book a Uganda Gorilla Permit?
Booking a gorilla permit is easier when you work with a licensed safari operator.
According to Uganda Wildlife Authority guidelines, foreign non-residents must purchase gorilla tracking permits through a tour operator licensed by the Uganda Tourism Board. UWA also operates an automated system for managing gorilla and chimpanzee permit reservations.
The usual booking process looks like this:
1. Choose Your Trekking Date
Start by deciding when you want to trek. Your safari dates should ideally be planned around the availability of the gorilla permit.
If you are flexible with your dates, tell your tour operator. They can check available dates and help you choose an option that works with your accommodation and transport arrangements.
2. Choose Your Trekking Sector
You will need to know which part of Bwindi you are visiting, or whether your trip will take you to Mgahinga.
Choosing your sector early is useful because accommodation is spread around the different trekking areas. You do not want to book a lodge in one sector and later discover that your permit is for a completely different part of the forest.
3. Check Permit Availability
Your tour operator checks the available permit dates through the official UWA reservation system.
UWA’s online booking system allows authorised users to enter planned visit dates and the number of visitors before reserving permits.
4. Pay for the Permit
Once the date and permit availability have been confirmed, payment needs to be made according to the current UWA booking requirements.
UWA has specifically warned travellers against sending permit payments to individuals or unofficial contacts. Approved payment channels include UWA’s designated payment systems, bank transfers and specified mobile money channels.
This is an important step because gorilla permits are expensive and scams can result in losing money as well as your planned trekking date.
5. Receive Your Booking Details
Once your permit has been secured, your safari operator should provide confirmation and incorporate the permit into your overall itinerary.
Keep your booking information safely and make sure the trekking date, number of travellers and trekking location are correct.
Why Should You Book Your Gorilla Permit Early?
Gorilla trekking is not an activity where you can always arrive in Uganda and expect to find a permit for the next morning.
Only a limited number of visitors can trek each gorilla family per day. This helps control visitor numbers and protects the gorillas from excessive disturbance.
Popular travel periods can therefore fill up well in advance.
Booking early also gives you more choice when selecting accommodation. This is particularly important if you want to stay in a specific lodge or prefer a particular Bwindi sector.
If you are planning a complete safari, securing the permit first also allows your operator to build the rest of the itinerary around your confirmed trekking date.
Can You Book a Gorilla Permit Directly?
UWA has online systems for its tourism products, but its current guidelines state that foreign non-resident gorilla permits must be purchased through a tour operator licensed by the Uganda Tourism Board.
For visitors planning their first Uganda safari, using a licensed operator can also make the process much simpler. The operator can coordinate the permit, accommodation, vehicle, driver-guide and other arrangements instead of leaving you to organise each part separately.
When choosing an operator, make sure you verify that the company is properly licensed and be cautious of anyone asking you to send permit money to a personal mobile-money number or unofficial account. UWA itself warns visitors about unauthorised contacts and transactions.
Can a Gorilla Permit Be Rescheduled?
This depends on the type of permit and the applicable UWA conditions.
The discounted low-season gorilla permits introduced for April, May and November 2026 cannot be rescheduled, so travellers choosing these cheaper permits need to be particularly careful when selecting their dates.
For any other booking, confirm the current cancellation and rescheduling conditions with your tour operator before making payment. Rules can change, so it is better to check the conditions attached to your specific booking rather than relying on an old safari article.

What Should You Bring for Gorilla Trekking?
Once your permit is booked, the next step is preparing for the trek.
The rainforest can be wet and muddy, and the terrain can be steep. Good hiking shoes, long trousers, a waterproof jacket, gardening-style gloves, a small backpack and drinking water are useful.
You should also be prepared for the possibility of a long trek. Finding the gorillas can take anything from a relatively short walk to several hours depending on where the family has moved.
A porter can be extremely helpful, particularly if you are carrying camera equipment or a heavier backpack.
