Booking a gorilla safari in Uganda is a little different from booking an ordinary wildlife trip. The gorillas are usually the main reason for the journey, but the experience involves much more than the trek itself.

The right length depends on your interests and how much time you want to spend travelling.
Accommodation Around Bwindi and Mgahinga
Where you stay depends partly on where your gorilla trek takes place.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has several trekking sectors, and choosing accommodation close to your meeting point can save you an unnecessary early-morning drive.
This is something worth discussing with your safari company before the lodge is booked.
There are simple guesthouses and budget camps for travelers watching their spending, as well as comfortable mid-range lodges and luxury properties with beautiful forest or mountain views.
Luxury accommodation can make the trip more relaxing, but you do not need an expensive lodge to have a memorable gorilla experience. If most of your time will be spent in the forest, a clean and comfortable place to sleep may be all you need.
Getting to the Gorilla Trekking Area
For many travelers, reaching southwestern Uganda is part of the adventure.
If you are travelling by road from Kampala or Entebbe, the journey can take several hours, depending on your destination and route. A safari company normally organizes the road transport and plans the stops along the way.
Domestic flights can be another option for travelers who want to reduce the amount of time spent on the road. Your operator can advise whether flying makes sense for your particular itinerary and accommodation location.
Whichever option you choose, remember that the gorilla trekking area is in southwestern Uganda, so it is worth allowing enough time for the journey rather than trying to rush there immediately before the trek.
What Happens on Trekking Day?
The actual trekking day starts early.
You will normally report to the relevant park headquarters for a briefing before heading into the forest with guides and trackers. How long you spend walking depends on where the gorilla family is located that day.
Sometimes you may find the gorillas relatively quickly. On other days, you may have to walk much farther through steep or muddy terrain.
Once you find the gorillas, you will spend a limited amount of time observing them according to the rules governing the experience.
This is one reason why comfortable hiking shoes, long trousers, a light rain jacket and a small backpack are useful. Bwindi’s weather can change quickly, and the forest terrain can be challenging.
What Else Can Be Added to the Package?
Gorilla trekking does not have to be the only activity on your trip.
Depending on your route, you can add game drives, boat trips, cultural experiences, nature walks or chimpanzee trekking.
Some travelers choose to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park before or after Bwindi. Others combine the trip with Kibale Forest for a broader primate experience.
The advantage of adding these activities is that you get to see a different side of Uganda instead of travelling all the way to the southwest just for one day in the forest.
However, do not add too many destinations simply to make the itinerary look impressive. Long driving days can leave you exhausted. A well-planned trip should give you enough time to actually enjoy each place.

There is no single price for a Uganda gorilla safari.
The final cost depends on the gorilla permit, number of travelers, number of days, accommodation level, transport, meals and any additional activities.
A budget package can be considerably cheaper than a luxury safari, while adding several destinations will naturally increase the total.
When comparing prices, look at what each company has included rather than choosing the cheapest quotation immediately. One company may include the gorilla permit, better accommodation and private transport, while another may leave some of those costs out.
