Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Planning a chimpanzee trek in Uganda? Learn when to visit Kibale Forest, what the weather is like and what to expect during the dry and rainy seasons.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

If you are planning a chimpanzee trekking trip, you may be wondering when to visit Uganda for the best experience. The good news is that chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is available throughout the year. However, the experience can feel quite different depending on the season.

Kibale Forest is Uganda’s most popular destination for chimpanzee trekking. It is a beautiful tropical forest, and rain is part of what keeps it green and full of life. So, while the weather is worth considering, it should not be the only thing you look at when choosing when to travel.

Dry Season: June to August and December to February

The drier months are often the easiest time to trek. The trails are usually less muddy, making it more comfortable to walk through the forest.

This can be particularly helpful if you are not used to hiking. You can spend several hours following the chimpanzees without constantly worrying about slippery ground.

The dry season is also popular for general wildlife trips in Uganda, so it can be a good time to combine Kibale with other destinations such as Queen Elizabeth National Park or Murchison Falls.

There is one thing to keep in mind, though. Drier conditions do not always mean chimpanzees will be easier to find. When food and water are less available in certain parts of the forest, the chimpanzees may move further away.

Wet Season: March to May and September to November

Don’t rule out the rainy season.

At first, trekking through a wet forest may not sound very appealing, especially when you imagine muddy trails and rain during your walk. But the wet season has its own advantages.

The forest is usually very green, and there is plenty of food for the chimpanzees. This can sometimes mean that they do not have to travel as far in search of food.

Rain also brings out the real character of Kibale Forest. The vegetation looks fresh, birds are active, and the whole forest feels alive.

Of course, you should be prepared for muddy and slippery trails. A good pair of hiking shoes and a waterproof jacket can make a big difference.

What Is Trekking in Kibale Forest Like?

Chimpanzee trekking is not simply a matter of walking into the forest and immediately finding the animals. You follow trails with experienced trackers and guides who know the forest and understand chimpanzee movements.

Some walks can be short, while others take several hours depending on where the chimpanzees are that day.

And the chimpanzees are not the only reason to enjoy the walk. Kibale Forest is home to several other primates and many bird species, so there is always something to look out for along the way.

You might hear monkeys calling from the trees or spot colourful birds as you move through the forest. Sometimes the forest itself becomes just as memorable as the chimpanzee encounter.

What Should You Wear?

Whatever month you choose, come prepared for a rainforest.

Wear comfortable trousers and sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. A light rain jacket is useful even when the forecast looks dry because weather can change quickly.

You should also carry drinking water and protect your camera or phone from rain. If you are visiting during the wetter months, expect some mud and don’t worry too much about getting your shoes dirty—that is part of the experience.

So, When Is the Best Time to Go?

If you want easier walking conditions, June to August and December to February are generally good choices.

If you don’t mind rain and want to experience the forest when it is particularly lush, the wetter months can also be rewarding. In fact, the rainy season can sometimes be a good period for tracking because chimpanzees have plenty of food within the forest.

In the end, there isn’t one month that guarantees a better chimpanzee encounter. These are wild animals, and their movements depend on food, weather and the forest conditions on the day.

Whenever you decide to visit, walking through Kibale Forest and hearing chimpanzees calling from the trees is an experience you are unlikely to forget.
