How Much Does Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda Cost?
Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is one of the most exciting ways to experience the country’s forests and wildlife. But the final cost of a chimpanzee safari is more than the trekking permit alone. You also need to think about accommodation, transport, meals, park fees and whether you are joining a group or taking a private safari.
Kibale National Park is the main destination for chimpanzee trekking, although experiences are also available in places such as Kyambura Gorge. UWA currently lists chimpanzee tracking, habituation and other primate activities at several protected areas.
Chimpanzee Trekking Permit Cost in Uganda
The chimpanzee permit is usually the biggest fixed cost of the experience. At Kibale National Park, the published UWA tariff has listed chimpanzee tracking at US$250 for foreign non-residents and US$200 for foreign residents. The fee includes the guide and, at Kibale, the park entrance fee.
UWA has also introduced lower-season chimpanzee tracking rates for April, May and November, at US$200 for foreign non-residents and US$150 for foreign residents. These low-season permits cannot be rescheduled.
From January 1, 2027, UWA has announced a revised tariff of US$300 for foreign non-residents, US$200 for foreign residents, US$100 for regional visitors and UGX 180,000 for East African Community citizens for chimpanzee tracking at Kibale.
For a different experience, chimpanzee habituation allows visitors to spend much longer with the chimpanzees. UWA’s announced 2027 rate is US$400 for foreign non-residents and US$300 for foreign residents.

Accommodation Costs
Where you sleep can make a big difference to your overall chimpanzee safari cost.
Around Kibale, travellers can choose from budget guesthouses and campsites, comfortable mid-range lodges and high-end forest lodges. Budget accommodation may cost around US$30–60 per person per night, while mid-range options can fall around US$70–150. Luxury properties can cost considerably more, particularly when meals and additional activities are included.
For a short chimpanzee trip, staying close to the park is usually worth the extra money. You avoid a long drive early in the morning and have more time to enjoy the forest.

Transport and Safari Costs
Transport is another major part of the budget, especially when travelling from Kampala or Entebbe. Kibale is about 326 km from Kampala by the quickest road route, and UWA estimates the journey at roughly six hours in normal conditions. There is also an option to fly to Kasese and continue by road to the park.
A private safari vehicle with a driver-guide generally costs more than joining a shared trip, but it gives you greater flexibility. The cost is normally influenced by the number of travellers, the vehicle used, the number of safari days and the places included in the itinerary.
For example, a simple two-day or three-day chimpanzee safari from Kampala may combine transport, accommodation, meals and the trekking activity into one package. Travelling as a small group can make the cost per person more affordable.
How Much Should You Budget?
There is no single price for a chimpanzee safari in Uganda because travellers choose different accommodation levels and itineraries.
As a rough planning guide, a budget two- to three-day chimpanzee safari could cost around US$400–700 per person, while a comfortable mid-range trip may be around US$600–1,000 or more. Luxury safaris can easily go beyond this depending on the lodge and services included.
These figures are planning estimates rather than fixed tour prices. A package that includes private transport, premium accommodation and several activities will naturally cost more than a basic chimpanzee trekking trip.
Is Chimpanzee Trekking Worth the Cost?
For many travellers, it is. Kibale offers one of Uganda’s best opportunities to see chimpanzees in their natural forest environment. UWA says the chimpanzee tracking walks normally take around two to five hours, depending on the movements of the chimpanzees, weather and forest conditions. Visitors are allowed one hour with the chimpanzees once they are located.
The experience can also be combined with other activities and destinations, making the cost of transport more worthwhile. A safari may include Kibale, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Semuliki or other parts of western Uganda.
