Bwindi vs Mgahinga: Which Gorilla Destination Is Better?

Bwindi vs Mgahinga is a common question for travellers planning a gorilla safari in Uganda. Both destinations offer the chance to walk through beautiful mountain forests and come face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas.

Bwindi impenetrable national park  is larger and has four main gorilla trekking sectors, while Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is much smaller and sits beneath the dramatic Virunga volcanoes. So, which one should you choose? It really depends on what kind of trip you want.

Bwindi vs Mgahinga: What Is the Difference?

Bwindi is famous for its thick, ancient rainforest, steep hills and several gorilla trekking sectors. The four main sectors are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, each with its own accommodation and trekking routes.

Mgahinga, on the other hand, is much smaller and has a more mountainous feel. The park is part of the Virunga landscape and is surrounded by volcanic peaks, including Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo.

If you want a classic rainforest experience with more choices, Bwindi is a great option. If volcanic scenery and a quieter atmosphere appeal to you, Mgahinga may be the better choice.

Which Has Better Gorilla Trekking?

Both parks offer an authentic mountain gorilla trekking experience.

In Bwindi, you have several sectors to choose from, which gives you more flexibility when planning your safari. The forest is dense and the terrain can be steep, so the trek can be physically demanding.

Mgahinga offers a smaller and more compact experience. The park has one habituated gorilla group available for trekking, with about eight permits available each day. This limited number of visitors can give the destination a quieter feel.

However, don’t choose a park simply because you have heard one trek is easier. Gorilla families move around, so the amount of walking depends on where the gorillas are on the day of your trek.

Bwindi vs Mgahinga: Which Has Better Scenery?

This one comes down to personal preference.

Bwindi is all about rainforest. Expect thick vegetation, towering trees, vines, mist and deep valleys. It feels wild and enclosed, which is exactly what many people imagine when they think about trekking for gorillas.

Mgahinga has a more open mountain character. The Virunga volcanoes rise around the forest, creating impressive views and plenty of opportunities for photographs.

If you love lush forests, Bwindi may win you over. If you prefer dramatic mountain landscapes, Mgahinga has a clear advantage.

Which Is Easier to Reach?

Both parks are located in southwestern Uganda, so reaching either one from Kampala or Entebbe involves a fairly long journey by road.

Bwindi has several access points because its trekking sectors are spread across a large area. Your route depends on whether you are heading to Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo.

Mgahinga is accessed through the Kisoro area. This can work particularly well for travellers combining Uganda with Rwanda because Kisoro is close to the border.

Road travel is the most common option, although domestic flights can save time if your budget allows.

Which Has Better Accommodation?

Bwindi generally offers more choice. You can find everything from simple guesthouses and community accommodation to comfortable mid-range lodges and high-end forest properties.

Mgahinga also has good accommodation around the park and nearby Kisoro, but there are fewer options compared with Bwindi.

Whichever park you choose, make sure your accommodation is close to your trekking location. This is especially important in Bwindi because the four sectors are not right next to each other.

What About the Gorilla Permit Cost?

The standard gorilla permit is not what separates the two destinations. Under Uganda Wildlife Authority’s current tariff, foreign non-residents pay US$800 per person for standard gorilla trekking.

The permit covers the official trekking experience, but your overall safari cost will also include things such as accommodation, transport, meals and possibly a porter.

Which Is Better for Other Activities?

Besides gorilla trekking, visitors can go golden monkey tracking and hike the Virunga volcanoes. If you enjoy hiking and want to make your trip more active, Mgahinga gives you plenty to consider.

Bwindi is better suited to travellers interested in rainforest experiences. Depending on the area, you can enjoy birdwatching, nature walks and community or cultural experiences.

So, if you want to climb a volcano during your Uganda trip, Mgahinga is the obvious choice.
