Hell’s Gate National Park is one of the more unusual safari destinations in Kenya because you do not have to spend the whole day inside a safari vehicle. Located in the Great Rift Valley near Lake Naivasha, the park is known for its dramatic cliffs, deep gorges, rocky landscapes, and open grasslands. It is a place where you can get out, stretch your legs, and experience the scenery up close.
Cycling and walking are some of the experiences that make Hell’s Gate different. You can follow trails through the park while giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, and antelopes move across the surrounding landscape. With a local guide, you can also explore parts of the gorge and learn about the geology and wildlife of the area.
The scenery is a major attraction here. Towering cliffs and unusual rock formations rise from the valley, while geothermal activity beneath the ground has shaped much of the landscape. The park’s hot springs and natural steam vents are reminders that this is an active volcanic region.
Hell’s Gate also has a connection to Kenya’s climbing and adventure scene. The cliffs provide opportunities for rock climbing, while the walking trails offer plenty of chances for photography. Bird watchers can also look out for raptors and other species soaring above the gorge.
Because it is close to Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate is easy to include in a Rift Valley itinerary. You can spend part of the day cycling or hiking through the park and later relax beside the lake or take a boat ride. For travelers who want something more active than a traditional game drive, Hell’s Gate is an excellent choice.
