Semuliki National Park is a fascinating destination in western Uganda, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unlike Uganda’s open savannah parks, Semuliki is covered by tropical lowland forest and is known for its hot springs, birds, monkeys, and unusual wildlife. It is a great choice for travelers who want to see a different side of Uganda.
The Sempaya Hot Springs are one of the park’s biggest attractions. A guided walk through the forest leads visitors to the hot springs, where water and steam rise from the ground. The surrounding forest makes the walk enjoyable, and guides can explain the local stories and traditions connected to the springs.
Semuliki is also a rewarding place for bird watching, with many species found within the forest. Visitors may also come across chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, baboons, and other forest wildlife. Because the park sits within the Albertine Rift and has strong Central African influences, some of its wildlife is rarely seen elsewhere in Uganda.
Nature walks are one of the best ways to explore Semuliki. Instead of rushing through the forest, you can take your time listening to birds, watching monkeys in the trees, and discovering the plants and smaller creatures around you. Cultural experiences with communities near the park can also be included in a visit.
Semuliki National Park can be combined with other western Uganda destinations such as Kibale Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the Rwenzori Mountains. It is particularly suitable for travelers who enjoy forests, bird watching, nature walks, and places that feel a little off the usual tourist route.
