Tarangire National Park is one of those places that can surprise you. It may not receive the same attention as the Serengeti, but once you enter the park, the combination of elephants, enormous baobab trees, open plains, and quiet corners of wilderness quickly shows why it deserves a place on a Tanzania safari. The park is in northern Tanzania and takes its name from the Tarangire River, an important source of water for wildlife.
Elephants are probably the first animals that come to mind when people talk about Tarangire. Large herds can be seen moving through the park, sometimes walking between the huge baobabs or gathering around the river. Watching a family of elephants interact, especially when young calves are around, can be one of the most enjoyable moments of a game drive.
There is plenty more to look for. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, warthogs, and different antelope species live in the park. The area is also well known for its birdlife, so visitors who enjoy photography or bird watching will have plenty to keep them busy.
The scenery changes with the seasons. During dry periods, animals are drawn towards the Tarangire River and other remaining water sources. When the rains arrive, parts of the park become greener, and the landscape takes on a completely different appearance. The giant baobabs remain a constant feature and give the park an atmosphere that is difficult to find elsewhere.
Tarangire is usually included in northern Tanzania safari routes and can be combined with Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park. It is also a good choice for travelers who prefer a quieter safari setting.
If you enjoy elephants, photography, birds, and unusual landscapes, Tarangire National Park is a destination worth taking your time to explore.
