How to Book a Uganda Gorilla Safari
Booking a gorilla safari in Uganda may seem complicated when you first start looking at permits, lodges, transport and different safari packages. In reality, the process becomes much easier when you plan everything in the right order.
The most important thing to remember is that your gorilla trekking permit should come first. Once you have a confirmed trekking date and location, you can build the rest of your safari around it.
Whether you want a short gorilla-focused trip or a longer Uganda safari combining gorillas with wildlife, here is a simple way to plan and book your trip.
1. Decide When You Want to Travel
Start by choosing your preferred travel dates.
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is available throughout the year, so you can plan your trip around your own schedule. However, weather conditions, accommodation availability and the number of visitors can vary during the year.
Some travellers prefer the drier periods because trekking trails can be easier to manage, while others travel during wetter months when there may be fewer tourists and some accommodation options may offer better rates.
You do not necessarily have to wait for the perfect weather. Bwindi is a rainforest, so rain is always possible.
What matters most is choosing dates that give you enough time to travel to the gorilla trekking area without rushing.

4. Choose the Right Safari Duration
Next, decide how many days you can spend in Uganda.
A short 3-day gorilla safari can work if your main goal is simply to trek gorillas. However, adding a few extra days allows you to enjoy more of Uganda instead of spending most of your time travelling.
You could combine your gorilla trek with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Bunyonyi, Kibale Forest or another destination depending on your interests.
If you have a week or more, you have much more flexibility to create a relaxed itinerary.
Do not try to fit too many destinations into a short holiday. Uganda is larger than it may look on a map, and travelling between parks can take several hours.
5. Select Your Accommodation
Once your trekking date and sector are confirmed, choose your accommodation.

Try to stay close to your trekking sector so that you do not have to spend a long time travelling to the briefing point on the morning of your trek.

You do not have to spend a fortune on accommodation to enjoy gorilla trekking. A comfortable lodge in a convenient location can be a much better choice than an expensive property that is far from your trekking point.
6. Arrange Transport
Transport is another important part of your booking.
Most international visitors arrive at Entebbe International Airport and then travel towards southwestern Uganda by road or use a domestic flight followed by a road transfer.
Travelling by 4×4 safari vehicle is a popular option because you can use the same vehicle for other wildlife activities if you are combining gorilla trekking with a safari.
Road travel also allows you to see more of Uganda along the way.
If you have limited time, a domestic flight can shorten the journey considerably.
Ask your safari operator whether the quoted price includes the vehicle, driver, fuel, airport transfers and other necessary transportation.
7. Add Other Safari Activities
Your gorilla trek does not have to be the only activity on your Uganda trip.
If you have enough time, you could add a wildlife safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, including a game drive and Kazinga Channel boat cruise.
You could also visit Lake Bunyonyi, go chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest or include other attractions depending on your route.
