Uganda is one of the best places in Africa to see chimpanzees in the wild, and travelers have more than one forest to choose from. Two of the most popular options are Kibale Forest and Budongo Forest.
Both offer chimpanzee trekking, experienced guides and the chance to walk through beautiful tropical forest. However, the two destinations are quite different when it comes to location, accessibility and the type of safari they fit into.
So, when comparing Kibale Forest vs Budongo Forest for chimpanzee trekking, which one is better?
The answer depends largely on the kind of Uganda safari you are planning.
Kibale Forest for Chimpanzee Trekking
Kibale Forest is probably Uganda’s best-known destination for chimpanzee trekking. Located in western Uganda near Fort Portal, the forest is famous for its primates and is often included in itineraries covering the western part of the country.
Chimpanzee trekking takes place mainly around the Kanyanchu area. You enter the forest with guides and trackers who follow signs of the chimpanzees and help locate the group.
Once the chimpanzees are found, you may watch them feeding, climbing trees, grooming one another, moving through the forest or calling to each other. Sometimes they stay close to the ground, while at other times they can be high in the canopy.
The experience is not only about chimpanzees. Kibale is home to several other primate species, and you may also see monkeys and many different birds during your walk.
Budongo Forest for Chimpanzee Trekking
Budongo Forest offers another opportunity to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat. It is located in northern Uganda, within the wider Murchison Falls conservation area.
One of its biggest advantages is how naturally it fits into a Murchison Falls safari.
Imagine spending part of your trip watching chimpanzees in the forest and then heading out for a game drive to look for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and other wildlife. You can also take a boat trip along the Nile to see the famous Murchison Falls.
This makes Budongo particularly attractive for travelers who want to combine primate experiences with a traditional Uganda wildlife safari.
The forest itself is also worth experiencing. Walking beneath tall trees and listening to the sounds of the forest gives you a completely different feeling from being out on the open savannah.
Kibale vs Budongo: Location and Accessibility
Location is one of the biggest differences between the two.
Kibale is in western Uganda and is usually combined with destinations such as Fort Portal, Queen Elizabeth National Park and other attractions in the western region. It is a good choice for travelers following a western Uganda route.
Budongo is further north and works especially well with Murchison Falls National Park.
This means neither destination is automatically “easier” to reach. It depends on where the rest of your safari is taking you.
If your itinerary already includes Queen Elizabeth, Fort Portal or other western destinations, travelling to Kibale makes sense.
If Murchison Falls is already on your itinerary, Budongo may be the more convenient option.

The Forest Environment
The experience of walking through Kibale and Budongo is different from a normal game drive.

Budongo also has a beautiful mature forest environment, with tall trees and plenty of vegetation. Because it forms part of the larger Murchison Falls landscape, it can give travelers a nice contrast between forest and savannah during the same safari.
In both destinations, you need patience. Chimpanzees are wild animals and can move quickly, disappear into thick vegetation or remain high in the trees.
Which One Has the Better Chimpanzee Experience?
If chimpanzee trekking is the main reason for your Uganda trip, Kibale is generally the destination most travelers choose.
It has a long-established chimpanzee tourism experience and is particularly well known for primate activities. It is also the better-known destination for travelers who want to combine ordinary chimpanzee trekking with a longer habituation experience.
Budongo, however, can be an excellent choice if chimpanzee trekking is one part of a larger safari rather than the main focus.
You can spend time in the forest and then continue with the wider Murchison Falls experience.
So rather than asking which forest is universally better, think about what you want from the entire trip.
Can You Do Chimpanzee Habituation?
Yes, this is another factor to consider when choosing your destination.
Chimpanzee habituation is different from ordinary trekking. Instead of spending a limited period observing a chimpanzee group that is already accustomed to people, habituation allows visitors to spend considerably more time following and observing chimpanzees that are still becoming comfortable around human presence.
Kibale is particularly well known for this experience.
If you are interested in spending more time studying chimpanzee behavior, taking photographs or simply having a longer forest experience, habituation may be worth considering.
Kibale or Budongo: Which Should You Choose?
For a traveler whose priority is chimpanzee trekking, Kibale would usually be my first choice. It offers a strong primate-focused experience and is easy to combine with other western Uganda attractions.
But if you are planning a Murchison Falls safari, Budongo is a very sensible option. You can add chimpanzee trekking to your itinerary without having to travel all the way to western Uganda.
The best choice therefore depends on your route, available time and what you want to see beyond chimpanzees.
Whichever forest you choose, the experience is about more than simply seeing a chimpanzee. It is about walking through one of Uganda’s beautiful forests, listening to the sounds around you and watching these fascinating animals behave naturally in their own environment.
