What to Wear for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Planning a chimpanzee trek in Uganda? Learn what to wear, which shoes to choose and how to stay comfortable and protected while walking through the forest.

What to Wear for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Knowing what to wear for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda can make a big difference to your experience. You may spend several hours walking through a tropical forest, sometimes on muddy or uneven trails, so comfort is more important than looking dressed up for the safari.

Kibale Forest is a rainforest environment, which means the weather can change during the day. You may start your trek in cool conditions, walk through warm and humid forest and then experience rain before you return.

The good thing is that you do not need expensive specialist hiking clothes. With the right basics, you can be comfortable and protected throughout the trek.

Wear Long Trousers

Long trousers are one of the most useful things to wear for chimpanzee trekking.

You will be walking through thick vegetation, bushes and sometimes areas where branches and plants hang across the trail. Long trousers help protect your legs from scratches, insects and plants along the way.

Choose something lightweight and comfortable rather than heavy jeans. Jeans can become uncomfortable when they get wet and take longer to dry.

Trekking trousers, lightweight outdoor trousers or comfortable cargo pants are good options.

Avoid wearing shorts unless you are particularly comfortable with exposed legs in a forest environment. Even when the weather is warm, long trousers offer better protection.

Choose a Comfortable Long-Sleeved Shirt

A lightweight long-sleeved shirt is another useful choice.

It protects your arms from branches and insects while you are walking through the forest. It can also help protect you from the sun when you are in more open areas.

You do not need to wear several heavy layers. Uganda can be warm, and walking for several hours can make you sweat. A breathable shirt that allows air to circulate is much more comfortable.

Neutral or earthy colours such as green, brown or khaki are also a practical choice for wildlife activities. There is no need to dress exactly like a ranger, but avoiding very bright clothing can make sense when spending time around wildlife.

Wear Proper Hiking Shoes

Your footwear may be the most important part of your outfit.

Chimpanzee trekking involves walking on natural forest trails, and these can become muddy and slippery, especially after rain. You may also encounter tree roots, uneven ground and steep sections.

A pair of sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good grip is therefore recommended.

Your shoes should already be comfortable before you arrive. Do not bring a brand-new pair and wear them for the first time on your trek. Blisters can quickly turn an enjoyable forest walk into an uncomfortable one.

Water-resistant footwear is useful during the rainy season, although even good hiking shoes can get muddy. That’s simply part of trekking in a rainforest.

Carry a Rain Jacket

Even if you check the weather before leaving, bring a light rain jacket.

Kibale receives rainfall throughout the year, and conditions can change while you are inside the forest. A small waterproof jacket can keep you comfortable if rain starts during the trek.

A poncho can also work, especially if you are carrying a backpack, but make sure it does not interfere with your walking.

It is better to carry a rain jacket and not need it than to spend hours walking through a wet forest without one.

What About Socks?

Good socks are easy to overlook, but they matter when you are walking for several hours.

Choose comfortable, breathable socks that fit well inside your hiking shoes. Avoid very thin socks that can cause rubbing, particularly if you are not used to long walks.

It is also a good idea to carry an extra pair in your day bag. If your feet get wet during the trek, changing into dry socks afterwards can make a surprisingly big difference.

Protect Yourself From Insects

The forest is home to insects, so wearing clothes that cover most of your skin is useful.

Long trousers and long sleeves provide a basic layer of protection. You can also use insect repellent on exposed areas.

Some travelers prefer to tuck their trousers into their socks, especially when walking through thick vegetation. It may not look particularly fashionable, but it can provide an additional layer of protection.

What Should You Avoid Wearing?

There are a few things best left at your accommodation.

High heels, sandals and open shoes are not suitable for chimpanzee trekking. Even if the weather looks dry, forest trails can become slippery.

Heavy clothing is also unnecessary. You will be walking and the forest can be humid, so breathable clothing is much more comfortable.

Avoid clothes that are so tight that they restrict your movement. You should be able to step over roots, climb small slopes and move comfortably through vegetation.

And don’t wear your best clothes. There is a good chance they will get dusty or muddy.

What Should You Carry in Your Day Bag?

Keep your day bag simple. You don’t want to carry unnecessary weight for several hours.

A few useful items include drinking water, a light rain jacket, insect repellent, sunscreen, a camera or phone and some snacks if allowed.

A waterproof bag or dry bag can also help protect your phone and other electronics if it rains.

Dress for Comfort, Not Fashion

The most important thing to remember when deciding what to wear for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is that you are going into a real forest.

You may get muddy. You may sweat. It may rain. You may walk for longer than expected before finding the chimpanzees.

That is all part of the experience.

Wear comfortable clothes that protect you from the forest, choose sturdy shoes with good grip and carry something waterproof. Once you are properly dressed, you can concentrate on the exciting part—following the sounds of chimpanzees through Kibale Forest and eventually seeing them moving through the trees.
