Where to See Giraffes in Uganda
Where to See Giraffes in Uganda is one of the most common questions for travellers planning a wildlife safari, especially those hoping to photograph these graceful animals in their natural habitat. Uganda is home to the Nubian giraffe, a critically endangered subspecies that can be found in several protected areas across the country.
The best-known destination for giraffe sightings is Murchison Falls National Park, which has by far the largest giraffe population in Uganda. Giraffes can also be encountered in Kidepo Valley National Park, Lake Mburo National Park and Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, each offering a very different safari setting.
Whether you are watching a giraffe quietly browsing from the top of an acacia tree or seeing a group moving across the open savannah, these encounters are a memorable part of a Uganda safari. The good news is that giraffe viewing can easily be included in a wider wildlife itinerary alongside elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards and other animals.
Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park is the best-known destination for seeing giraffes in Uganda.
The park contains by far the country’s largest giraffe population. UWA’s latest survey recorded approximately 2,250 Nubian giraffes in Murchison Falls, making up the vast majority of Uganda’s national population.
Giraffes are particularly associated with the park’s northern sector, where open savannah and woodland provide suitable feeding habitat. The Buligi area is one of the well-known areas for wildlife viewing, and giraffes can often be seen browsing on trees as vehicles move through the savannah.
Their height makes them surprisingly easy to recognise from a distance. You may first notice a head and long neck rising above the vegetation before spotting the rest of the herd.
Murchison Falls is also an excellent choice for travelers who want more than giraffes. Game drives can produce sightings of elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, hartebeests, lions and other wildlife, while a boat trip along the Victoria Nile offers a completely different view of the park.
If you are planning a wider [Uganda Wildlife Safari], Murchison Falls is one of the strongest places to include for giraffe viewing.
Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo Valley National Park offers a very different giraffe experience.
Located in northeastern Uganda, Kidepo is known for its remote landscapes, dramatic mountains and relatively wild atmosphere. UWA identifies it as one of the four protected areas where Nubian giraffes occur.
The giraffe population in Kidepo has an interesting conservation history. In the 1990s, the population had fallen to only a few individuals because of illegal hunting and insecurity in the region. Conservation efforts, including translocations from Murchison Falls, helped rebuild the population. UWA currently describes Kidepo as one of the best places in Uganda to see these giraffes.
A giraffe sighting in Kidepo can feel particularly special because of the setting. Instead of simply seeing an animal beside a busy safari track, visitors may find giraffes moving across wide open plains beneath the surrounding mountains.
Kidepo is also home to lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras and numerous antelope species, making it a rewarding destination for travelers looking for a more remote Uganda safari.
Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park is another place where visitors can see Uganda’s Nubian giraffes.
Giraffes disappeared from the Lake Mburo area for more than a century before 15 individuals were reintroduced from Murchison Falls in 2015. The population has since grown, and UWA’s latest assessment recorded 64 giraffes in the park during the 2023–2025 period.
Because Lake Mburo is relatively close to Kampala compared with Uganda’s more remote parks, it can be a convenient choice for travelers with limited time.
The park also offers a different style of safari. Alongside traditional game drives, visitors can experience walking safaris and other activities that allow them to appreciate the landscape at a slower pace.
For someone looking for a short wildlife getaway rather than a long northern Uganda expedition, Lake Mburo can be a practical addition to an itinerary.
Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve
Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve is the fourth protected area where Uganda’s Nubian giraffes occur.
The reserve forms part of Uganda’s wider giraffe conservation landscape and is located in the Karamoja region. Its open grasslands and rugged scenery provide suitable habitat for giraffes and other wildlife.
However, Pian Upe receives fewer international safari visitors than Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley or Lake Mburo. For a first-time Uganda safari focused on giraffes, the more established tourism destinations are generally easier to incorporate into an itinerary.
Its importance from a conservation perspective is nevertheless significant because maintaining giraffes across several protected areas reduces the country’s reliance on a single population.
What Makes Uganda’s Giraffes Special?
Uganda’s giraffes have an important conservation story.
The animals found in the country are the Nubian giraffe, which UWA notes was formerly classified as the Rothschild’s giraffe. The subspecies is considered critically endangered.
Their recovery in Uganda has involved both natural population growth and carefully planned translocations.
For example, giraffes were moved from Murchison Falls to the southern bank of the park in 2016 and 2017, helping expand their range within Murchison. Giraffes were also reintroduced to Lake Mburo in 2015 after having disappeared from the area for many decades.
These conservation efforts mean that a giraffe sighting is not simply another wildlife encounter. It is also part of a broader story about restoring Uganda’s wildlife populations.
When Is the Best Time to See Giraffes?
Giraffes can be seen throughout the year in Uganda’s main wildlife destinations.
During drier periods, vegetation can become less dense, sometimes making animals easier to spot. Giraffes are also frequently seen browsing on trees and shrubs in open woodland and savannah.
Early morning and late afternoon game drives are generally pleasant times to explore the parks because temperatures are cooler and many animals are active.
However, giraffes are not restricted to a particular time of day. Their tall bodies make them relatively easy to recognize when they are out in the open, although thick vegetation can still hide them surprisingly well.
Add Giraffe Viewing to Your Uganda Safari
Whether you encounter a giraffe browsing quietly beside a safari track in Murchison Falls or spot one crossing the open plains of Kidepo, seeing Uganda’s Nubian giraffes is an unforgettable wildlife experience.
Murchison Falls is the country’s leading destination for giraffe viewing because it supports the largest population by far. Kidepo offers a more remote experience, while Lake Mburo is an excellent option for shorter itineraries. Pian Upe adds another important part of Uganda’s giraffe conservation story.
If you are planning a broader wildlife trip, giraffe viewing can easily be combined with game drives, boat safaris, birding and other wildlife experiences.
